Another major contest will headline the opening weekend of the IPL 2026. Mumbai Indians will face Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Interestingly, the first weekend will not feature double-headers. Instead, the league will schedule four double-headers during the weekends of April 4–5 and April 11–12.During the first phase of the IPL 2026 schedule, all ten teams will play four matches each.
Elections Force Two-Phase IPL 2026 Schedule
The league decided to release the IPL 2026 schedule in two phases because elections will take place in several states. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Assam will hold elections during the tournament window. These states host teams such as Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. As a result, organizers announced only the first phase of the IPL 2026 schedule.
Similar scheduling adjustments occurred in previous IPL seasons during election years.
Multiple Venues Added for IPL 2026 Matches
Several franchises will also use secondary venues during the IPL 2026. Rajasthan Royals will play three matches in Guwahati before returning to Jaipur.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru will host two games in Raipur during the tournament. Meanwhile, Punjab Kings will play three matches in Dharamsala.
These venue changes will add variety to the IPL 2026 schedule and bring matches to more cities.
