MS Dhoni on IPL 2026: “I Have Four-Five Months to Decide”

MS Dhoni’s IPL 2026 future remains uncertain after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ended their campaign in IPL 2025. The legendary captain addressed his plans following CSK’s final league match, leaving fans wondering if he will return next season.

After leading CSK to an 83-run win over Gujarat Titans, Dhoni shared that he would take time to reflect. “I will go back to Ranchi – haven’t been home in a long time – enjoy a few bike rides, take a couple of months, and then decide,” he said. This statement has sparked fresh speculation around MS Dhoni’s return in IPL 2026.

CSK’s Disappointing Season in IPL 2025

Although CSK secured a dominant victory in their final game, their overall performance in IPL 2025 was below expectations. The team finished at the bottom of the points table, winning only four matches out of 14. It marked the first time in IPL history that CSK ended a season at the bottom.

Despite their struggles, the final match saw CSK posting their highest total of the season, scoring 238. Gujarat Titans were bowled out for 147, thanks to impressive spells from Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad, who took three wickets each. Noor ended his campaign with 24 wickets.

Dhoni Reflects on Fitness, Hunger, and Contribution

When discussing his IPL 2026 comeback, Dhoni emphasized that age and fitness play a crucial role. He turns 44 in July and noted, “Every year, it takes 15% more effort to stay fit.” He added that retirement decisions shouldn’t be based only on performance, but also on hunger, fitness, and team requirements.

The veteran clarified he isn’t confirming retirement or a return. “I have the luxury of time. So why not think properly and decide?” Dhoni remarked.

Preparing the Team for Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Return

During the season, Dhoni resumed captaincy after Ruturaj Gaikwad suffered an elbow injury. Even though the team couldn’t bounce back, CSK focused on developing young talent like Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, and Shaik Rasheed.

Dhoni expressed confidence in the team’s batting and bowling combinations. According to him, the squad now looks more balanced, and when Gaikwad returns, he’ll have fewer changes to worry about.

Dhoni’s Legacy and What’s Next

While chants of “Dhoni, Dhoni” echoed in Ahmedabad, the former Indian skipper maintained a calm stance. Fans will now wait patiently as Dhoni decides on his IPL 2026 future over the coming months.
