Australia’s star batter, Steven Smith, is ready to return for the second Test against West Indies following a unique recovery method. The Steven Smith injury update confirms that his finger has healed well, and he has resumed full training.
Creative Recovery in New York
After dislocating his right little finger in the WTC final, Smith decided to skip surgery. Instead, he headed to New York, where he owns an apartment. To stay in touch with the game, he used a baseball batting cage under a bridge, avoiding heat and sweat while training.
He started by facing tennis and soft balls. By the second session, he moved to hard balls. Smith recorded the sessions and sent them to Australia’s medical team, who cleared him for full participation.
Training Resumes in Barbados
Once back with the squad, Smith had his stitches removed and switched to a lighter splint. With improved hand mobility, he began batting again. According to Smith, the finger felt good, and hitting the ball came naturally. He plans two batting sessions before the second Test starts in Grenada.
Though he will likely field at mid-on or fine leg due to recovery, he remains confident. Smith admitted that adapting to those fielding positions will be a new experience.
Grenada Test Set to Feature Smith
Australia travel to Grenada, a venue they last visited in 2008. The short turnaround between Tests means rest for the bowlers, while Smith prepares to rejoin the XI. His presence boosts the batting lineup as the team looks to build on their series lead.
The Test also holds milestones. Mitchell Starc is set for his 99th appearance and nears the 400-wicket mark. Kraigg Brathwaite will play his 100th for West Indies, adding historic weight to the match.
