Sri Lanka T20I captaincy change discussions have intensified as selectors reportedly reconsider Charith Asalanka’s role ahead of the home T20 World Cup. Although chief selector Upul Tharanga clarified that no official decision has been finalised, he confirmed that the panel is seriously evaluating leadership alternatives.

Sri Lanka T20I Captaincy Change Considered Amid Asalanka’s Struggles

Sri Lanka T20I captaincy change talks began largely due to Asalanka’s prolonged dip in T20I form. Furthermore, his sudden return home before the ongoing tri-series in Pakistan increased speculation. While team management explained that illness forced his withdrawal, the timing suggested a deeper review of his position.

Tharanga acknowledged that Asalanka’s output has fallen well below expectations. Across 68 T20I innings, he has managed a strike rate of just 126, and his 2025 numbers remain underwhelming — 156 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 122. Consequently, Sri Lanka’s inconsistent middle order has been highlighted as a major concern.

Selectors Weigh Leadership Options Ahead of the World Cup

Selectors had already been exploring leadership depth, even before the Pakistan tour. That was the reason behind appointing former captain Dasun Shanaka as vice-captain for the series. According to Tharanga, this decision provided “another option” should the need arise.

Even so, Tharanga reiterated that Asalanka has not been officially removed. He emphasised that the Sri Lanka T20I captaincy change remains under discussion and not confirmed. Although illness forced Asalanka’s early exit, Tharanga insisted that the captain remains part of their World Cup planning.

Illness or Internal Conflict? Selectors Address Rumours

Because Asalanka was flown back home mid-tour, local media speculated that he had opposed staying in Pakistan after the suicide bombing in Islamabad. However, Tharanga dismissed the rumours, explaining that physios could not guarantee a recovery timeline. As a result, the management opted for a replacement to stabilise the middle order.

Moreover, Tharanga assured that Asalanka remains valued and will likely feature as a key batter during the T20 World Cup. He called him “a very talented cricketer” with proven match-winning ability in the middle order.
