Dewald Brevis sets South Africa T20I record with fearless batting
South Africa T20 coach Shukri Conrad has urged his players to display greater confidence after their last-over defeat against Australia in the T20I series decider. Despite proving their skills in patches, Conrad believes the team is holding back from showing the world what they are truly capable of.
Conrad on South Africa’s T20I Mindset
Following consecutive last-over losses, first against New Zealand and then against Australia, South Africa cricket coach Conrad stressed that belief is as important as skill. According to him, teams such as Australia commit fully to their approach, regardless of whether it looks risky. In contrast, some Proteas batters appear too cautious, preventing them from playing with freedom.
Brevis Leads by Example
Young star Dewald Brevis provided the perfect example of what Conrad wants to see. The 22-year-old not only scored the highest individual T20I score for South Africa with 125 not out, but he also finished as the leading run-scorer of the series. His fearless batting style, filled with confidence and flair, was described by South Africa T20 coach Shukri Conrad as a model for others.

Concerns Over Markram’s Form
Captain Aiden Markram’s struggles also drew attention. Having gone 31 innings without a T20I half-century, he appeared tentative at the crease. Conrad, however, reminded everyone of Markram’s ability, citing his performance in the World Test Championship final. The coach insisted that unlocking Markram’s natural flair is crucial for South Africa’s T20 success.
South Africa T20 Team Selection and Balance
The Proteas went into the series “a batter light,” something Shukri Conrad acknowledged. Nevertheless, he argued that a braver batting approach could turn this challenge into an advantage. With allrounders providing balance, Conrad believes that a fearless batting lineup can compete strongly even against top teams like Australia.
Looking Ahead to the T20 World Cup
Preparation for the next T20 World Cup continues under the guidance of South Africa T20 coach Shukri Conrad. Although two series deciders have been lost during his tenure, he views them as part of a longer-term plan. According to him, South Africa’s growth will accelerate if players embrace confidence, showcase their skills openly, and avoid playing within limits.
