By the tea break on Day 2 of the India vs England Edgbaston Test, Shubman Gill had made history. The young skipper remained unbeaten on 265, setting the highest Test score by an Indian captain, surpassing Virat Kohli’s 254*. With his effortless strokeplay and sharp judgment, Gill ensured India were in total command at 564 for 7.

Gill’s Record-Breaking Double Century Anchors India

Not only did Gill reach his maiden Test double century, but he also recorded the highest Test score by an Indian in England, overtaking Sunil Gavaskar’s iconic 221 from 1979. The landmark innings came in style as Gill batted across three sessions, rarely offering England any chances.

While the surface remained batter-friendly, the innings required discipline. Gill chose minimal risk, caressing boundaries with precision. Bowlers, especially Shoaib Bashir, struggled as the captain rotated strike and found gaps regularly. Such composure made the Shubman Gill double century one of the most dominant in recent Indian Test history.

Jadeja and Sundar Provide Strong Support

Partnerships proved crucial. A 203-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja, who scored 89, laid the platform. Later, Washington Sundar contributed 42 in a 144-run partnership for the seventh wicket. England managed only one wicket in each of the two sessions, with Joe Root dismissing Sundar just before tea.

Despite Root’s success, questions arose about his limited bowling role. Captain Ben Stokes tried several options, including Harry Brook’s medium pace, but with little success.

India Push for Historic Total Against England

India are now eyeing their highest-ever total in England. The decision to strengthen the lower middle-order after Headingley’s collapse proved effective. With the Shubman Gill highest Test score by Indian captain, India crossed 500 and are closing in on the highest score ever conceded by England in the Stokes-McCullum era.
