Shafali Verma has made a strong comeback as she replaces Pratika Rawal in the India Women’s World Cup squad ahead of the semi-final against Australia. Rawal injured her ankle while fielding in India’s last league game against Bangladesh. This forced the team to make a late change in the lineup.

Shafali Verma Returns to Strengthen India’s World Cup Squad

The India Women’s World Cup 2025 squad gained fresh energy with Shafali’s inclusion. The ICC approved her selection after Rawal’s injury was confirmed. Shafali, 21, was chosen over Tejal Hasabnis, the only reserve batter, highlighting the selectors’ faith in her explosive batting style.

Although she wasn’t part of the initial squad, her consistent domestic and India A performances made her a strong candidate for a recall. Her return gives India a balance of power and aggression at the top of the order. This is crucial before facing Australia in the knockout clash.

Outstanding Domestic and India A Form Justified Selection

Recent performances justified Shafali Verma’s selection in India Women’s World Cup 2025 squad. She last featured in an ODI in October 2024 but impressed with India A. She scored 52 against Australia A and 70 against New Zealand A. In domestic one-day cricket, she amassed 527 runs for Haryana at an average of 75.28. This included a blistering 197 against Bengal.

Her WPL 2025 season for Delhi Capitals further boosted her credentials. She was the top-performing Indian batter, scoring 304 runs at a strike rate of 152.76. These results showed that she remains in top touch across formats.

Impact Ahead of India vs Australia Semi-Final

The semi-final against Australia might feature Shafali Verma as Smriti Mandhana’s opening partner, filling the gap left by Rawal. Rawal’s partnerships were key to India’s campaign. They produced two of the top five stands of the tournament, including a 212-run effort against New Zealand.

If India opts for a different combination, Harleen Deol or Jemimah Rodrigues could step up to open. Either way, Shafali’s return strengthens India’s batting depth ahead of the crucial clash.
