Sanju Samson Penalised ₹24 Lakh as RR Commit Second Over-Rate Violation in IPL 2025
In a recent development from the IPL 2025 season, Sanju Samson has been fined ₹24 lakh for Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) second over-rate offence. The incident occurred during RR’s clash against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad. As per IPL’s code of conduct, repeat offences result in heavier penalties, and Samson now faces the brunt of this regulation.
Sanju Samson Penalised Under IPL Code of Conduct
The IPL code clearly states under Article 2.22 that a captain is fined ₹24 lakh for a second over-rate offence. This strict rule aims to ensure matches proceed within scheduled time frames. Although earlier seasons imposed suspensions on captains after repeated violations, IPL 2025 has done away with such bans.
Moreover, the rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, must also bear the consequences. They are fined either ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fees—whichever is lower. This collective penalty holds every team member accountable for maintaining match pace.
RR’s First Over-Rate Offence Was Under Riyan Parag
Interestingly, RR’s first over-rate offence this season did not occur under Sanju Samson’s direct captaincy. During a match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) last month, Riyan Parag led the side, with Samson playing only as an Impact Player due to a finger injury. That time, Parag was fined ₹12 lakh for the slow over-rate.
This second breach comes amidst a tough phase for RR. After a strong start, they’ve now lost three of their five matches, slipping to seventh place on the IPL 2025 points table.
Impact of the Fine on Rajasthan Royals’ Campaign
This penalty adds to the pressure on RR, especially as they aim to bounce back in the upcoming fixtures. While Sanju Samson remains a crucial leader, maintaining over-rate discipline is now more essential than ever for RR’s playoff hopes.
