India’s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has suffered a right-foot fracture, which will sideline him for the remainder of the ongoing Test series against England. The injury was sustained on Day 1 of the fourth Test, and scans have confirmed a metatarsal fracture. The right-foot injury means Pant will not keep wickets during the match and will bat only if necessary.

Right-Foot Fracture Stops Pant’s Wicketkeeping Duties

According to the BCCI, Pant will not continue as a wicketkeeper for the rest of the match. Dhruv Jurel has stepped in to take over those duties. Pant, India’s vice-captain, was seen with his foot in a moonboot, as captured by fans outside the team hotel in Manchester. The right-foot fracture requires a recovery period of six to eight weeks.

How the Foot Injury Occurred During the Match

The incident happened when Pant attempted a reverse sweep against Chris Woakes, inside-edging the ball onto his foot. In immediate visible pain, Pant retired hurt after scoring 37 off 48 balls. Though he survived an LBW review on the same ball, the swelling was severe enough to prevent him from walking unaided. He left the field using a golf cart and underwent scans shortly after.

Injury Adds to Pant’s Recent Fitness Woes

This marks the second injury Pant has sustained in the series. Earlier in the series at Lord’s, he injured his left index finger while keeping wickets. Jurel had replaced him in that Test as well. England spinner Liam Dawson commented post-match that it was unlikely Pant would take further part in the game.

BCCI Yet to Name a Replacement for Pant

A formal statement from the BCCI confirming the fracture and naming a replacement for the fifth Test is still awaited. Ishan Kishan, who was second-choice behind Jurel during the unofficial India A games against England Lions, could be in contention.
