Mitchell ruled out of ODI series vs West Indies: New Zealand confirm replacement

The Mitchell ruled out of ODI series vs West Indies update has delivered a major setback for New Zealand, especially after Daryl Mitchell’s match-winning hundred in Christchurch. The star allrounder suffered a minor groin tear and will now miss the remaining two ODIs. His absence forces New Zealand to adjust their plans quickly, even though he is expected to return in time for the Test series next month.

Scan confirms groin tear

The injury occurred during Mitchell’s brilliant 119 off 118 balls, an innings that set up New Zealand’s narrow seven-run win. A scan later confirmed a minor left-groin tear, requiring around two weeks of rehabilitation. Consequently, he remained in Christchurch to begin his recovery programme.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter admitted the news was disappointing, especially given Mitchell’s outstanding form this summer. However, he also emphasised that the injury was minor and should not affect Mitchell’s availability for the first Test at Hagley Oval.

Henry Nicholls called up as Mitchell ruled out of ODI series vs West Indies

New Zealand have drafted Henry Nicholls into the squad as Mitchell’s replacement. Nicholls enters the ODI group in superb domestic form, leading the Ford Trophy scoring charts with 306 runs at an average of 76.50, including two consecutive centuries.

Additionally, Mark Chapman remains part of the squad and is averaging a remarkable 101.33 from four ODIs this year. With multiple batting options available, New Zealand still have depth despite the unavailability of several frontline players.

New Zealand’s growing injury list ahead of West Indies series

Mitchell’s exit adds to an expanding injury list. The hosts are already without Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Ben Sears and Mohammad Abbas. Kane Williamson was also rested due to a groin niggle as he prepares for the Test series.

Even with so many absentees, New Zealand remain confident. Captain Mitchell Santner praised Mitchell’s fighting spirit, calling him “a man for crisis” after the century. While the team must now cope without him, the belief remains strong heading into the second ODI in Napier.
