IPL 2025 Over-Rate Rules Revamped: No Captain Suspensions, New Demerit System Introduced
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has introduced a significant change to its over-rate penalty system for IPL 2025. Previously, captains faced a one-match suspension after three slow over-rate offences in a season. However, under the revised IPL code of conduct, only fines and in-game field restrictions will apply, aligning with the ICC’s code of conduct.
No Captain Suspension for Over-Rate Violations
Captains will no longer face a suspension for repeated slow over-rate violations in IPL 2025. Instead, monetary fines and fielding restrictions will serve as penalties. However, any suspensions handed out before this season remain valid. As a result, Hardik Pandya will miss Mumbai Indians’ opening match against Chennai Super Kings on March 23 due to a previous suspension.
Introduction of Demerit Points System
To maintain discipline, the IPL governing council has introduced demerit points for over-rate offences and other violations. Match referees will impose sanctions, with each penalty accumulating demerit points. A 25% match fee fine, for instance, will result in one demerit point. These points will stay on the player’s or official’s record for 36 months.
Suspension Based on Demerit Points
If a player, team official, or franchise accumulates a certain number of demerit points, a suspension may follow. Those facing Level 2 or 3 offences can appeal to the BCCI ombudsman after paying an appeal fee of INR 90 lakh (USD 104,000 approx.). This fee will be refunded only if the appeal is completely successful.
No Conversion of Pre-2025 Sanctions
Sanctions imposed before IPL 2025 will not be converted into demerit points under the new system. The revised regulations aim to ensure fair play while keeping the IPL code of conduct aligned with global cricketing standards.
