Shubman Gill’s Century Guides India to Victory Over Bangladesh in Champions Trophy 2025 Opener

Shami’s Early Strikes Rock Bangladesh

India kicked off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a dominant six-wicket win over Bangladesh in Dubai. A brilliant five-wicket haul from Mohammed Shami set the stage, restricting Bangladesh to a modest 228 before Shubman Gill’s unbeaten century sealed the chase comfortably.

Bangladesh, after opting to bat first, found themselves in deep trouble early on. Shami struck twice in quick succession, reducing them to 35-5 by the ninth over. Axar Patel also played his part, taking two wickets in two balls, nearly securing a hat-trick if not for a dropped catch by Rohit Sharma at slip.

Hridoy and Jaker Rescue Bangladesh

With half the side dismissed cheaply, Bangladesh were staring at an embarrassing collapse. However, a composed 154-run partnership between Tawhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali steadied the innings. Though their scoring rate remained slow, they built a crucial stand, showing resilience against India’s disciplined bowling attack.

Hridoy reached his maiden ODI century off 114 balls, while Jaker contributed 68 before falling to Shami, who became the fastest bowler to claim 200 ODI wickets in terms of balls bowled. Shami eventually wrapped up the innings with figures of 5-53, ensuring Bangladesh were bowled out for 228 in 49.4 overs.

Gill’s Masterclass in the Chase

India’s chase got off to a flying start, with skipper Rohit Sharma smashing a quick 41 off 36 balls. Gill, showing his class, played a patient yet stylish innings to anchor the chase. Even as Bangladesh tried to fight back with disciplined bowling, Gill remained unshaken.

The Tigers had a brief chance when Jaker Ali dropped KL Rahul, which could have turned the game with India still needing 64 runs. However, the opportunity went begging, and Rahul capitalized, staying unbeaten alongside Gill.

India Seal the Win with Ease

Gill reached his eighth ODI century in 129 balls, showcasing a mix of composure and elegance. He ensured India never lost control of the chase, and it was Rahul who finished things in style with a six over deep backward square.

With this victory, India have made a strong start in Group A, boosting their confidence for tougher challenges ahead in the Champions Trophy.
