Rohit Sharma retires from Test cricket with immediate effect, bringing an end to an 11-year-long journey in the longest format of the game. The announcement was made via social media, where Rohit confirmed his decision while adding that he would continue playing One Day Internationals for India.

A Career That Blended Brilliance and Challenges

Across 67 Test matches, Rohit Sharma scored 4301 runs, including 12 centuries. His red-ball career had many ups and downs, but several memorable innings ensured his legacy remained intact. He captained the Indian Test team in 24 matches, taking charge from Virat Kohli in 2022.

Key Moments in Rohit Sharma’s Test Career

Rohit’s Test debut was delayed in 2010 due to a freak injury just before the toss against South Africa. Eventually, he made his debut in 2013 against West Indies in Kolkata and scored a century. A second hundred followed in the next Test in Mumbai.

Despite a promising start, the next five years proved difficult. During that period, only one century was scored—against Sri Lanka in 2017. His Test career turned a corner in 2019 when he was promoted to open against South Africa. Notably, he scored a double century—212 in Ranchi—and two more hundreds in that series.

Peak Years and Recent Struggles

In 2021, Rohit Sharma delivered outstanding performances against England, with scores of 161 in Chennai and 127 at The Oval. His success continued in 2024 with two more centuries against the same opponent, as he led India to a 4-1 series win.

However, the 2024–25 season saw a decline. He averaged below 42 and managed only one 50+ score in his last 15 innings. His captaincy also came under scrutiny, especially after India lost a home series 0-3 to New Zealand, breaking a 12-year unbeaten record. Under his leadership, India registered 12 wins and 9 losses in Tests.

A New Era Begins for Indian Test Cricket

As Rohit Sharma retires from Test cricket, attention now shifts to the upcoming England tour. A new captain will be named soon, marking the beginning of a fresh chapter for India in the red-ball format.
