Naveen-ul-Haq Ruled Out of Asia Cup 2025, Ahmadzai Named Replacement

Afghanistan suffered a setback as Naveen-ul-Haq was ruled out of the Asia Cup 2025 due to a shoulder injury. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed that the pacer had not recovered fully and would continue his rehabilitation.

Naveen-ul-Haq’s Injury Update

Despite being included in the Asia Cup squad, Naveen missed the UAE tri-series earlier. An ACB statement on Naveen-ul-Haq’s Asia Cup absence clarified that he was still under medical supervision. According to the board, he will undergo intensive treatment until he regains full fitness.

Abdollah Ahmadzai Steps In as Replacement

Abdollah Ahmadzai replaced Naveen-ul-Haq in Afghanistan’s Asia Cup squad. The young pacer had already been part of the reserves. He featured in the UAE tri-series, where he made his international debut against the hosts. Ahmadzai picked up 1 for 31 in three overs, showing promise in his only T20I so far. In domestic T20s, he has claimed 15 wickets from 11 matches, making him a reliable option.

Naveen’s Recent Performances

Before this setback, Naveen-ul-Haq played his last international game in December 2024 against Zimbabwe. He also participated in franchise cricket this year. In the SA20 league, he took five wickets for Durban’s Super Giants. Later, in Major League Cricket (MLC), he impressed with eight wickets in five games for MI New York, the tournament champions.

Afghanistan’s Bowling Options Without Naveen-ul-Haq

The squad still carries depth despite Naveen’s absence. Fazalhaq Farooqi and Fareed Ahmad lead the pace attack, while Azmatullah Omarzai, Gulbadin Naib, and Karim Janat provide all-round options. Afghanistan’s Asia Cup 2025 campaign began strongly with a 94-run win against Hong Kong. Their next fixtures are against Bangladesh on September 16 and Sri Lanka on September 18.

What It Means for Afghanistan

With Naveen-ul-Haq ruled out of the Asia Cup, Afghanistan lose an experienced T20 bowler. However, Ahmadzai’s inclusion offers fresh energy and potential. Fans will closely watch how the young seamer fills the gap as Afghanistan aim for consistency in the tournament.
