Shubman Gill has raised important concerns regarding the balance of Test cricket in England, pointing to flat pitches and the quick deterioration of the Dukes ball. His comments came after India’s emphatic 336-run win at Edgbaston, which helped level the series 1-1.

Dukes Ball and Flat Pitches Take Away Competitive Edge

According to Shubman Gill, modern Test matches in England are becoming less competitive for bowlers. He believes the lack of assistance from both the pitch and the ball makes it difficult to take wickets, especially after the first 20 overs with the new ball.

“The Dukes ball loses shape too soon,” Gill observed. “Once that happens, it becomes all about damage control instead of hunting for wickets, which takes away the real essence of Test cricket.”

Batting First and Leading by Example

Gill’s personal performance was monumental in India’s win. He scored 269 and 161 at Edgbaston, showcasing patience and leadership. As captain, Gill emphasized the need to set an example when situations demand grit over flair. His commitment to the team-first mindset paid off, especially after he was dismissed on 147 in the previous Test.

“When you’re captain, you must walk the talk,” Gill said. “You sometimes sacrifice personal milestones to serve team goals.”

India Learn to Bat Long in Foreign Conditions

Traditionally, India play shorter matches due to spin-friendly conditions at home. In England, Gill noticed the need to adapt to longer games. However, he joked that it was a blessing they spent most of those days batting instead of fielding.

Posting consistent totals of 400 or more, Gill believes, will be the key in the remaining Tests. This will help reduce pressure on the bowlers while keeping the team in strong positions.

Praise for the Bowling Unit

Despite missing Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj claimed 17 wickets combined. Their efforts proved instrumental in sealing the win. Gill praised their heart and discipline, noting that India’s fast-bowling depth allows flexibility in any conditions.
