India Respond After Jaiswal’s Dismissal
India’s innings started positively, with Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring 87 to set the tone. He reached his fifty in just 59 balls, maintaining his strong record against England. However, his loose shot against Ben Stokes, slashing at a wide delivery, led to his downfall just before tea.
Jaiswal’s aggressive approach had paid off earlier, especially during a poor spell from Josh Tongue, but eventually, his impatience cost him. Gill, however, chose a more cautious route and anchored the innings with his seventh Test hundred.
Gill Captaincy Hundred Anchors India’s Innings
Pressure surrounded Shubman Gill’s century at Edgbaston, especially after the decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah raised eyebrows. Nevertheless, Gill absorbed the stress of captaincy and crafted a measured innings, reaching three figures off 199 balls.
His 216-ball effort included 11 fours, and he managed the England attack expertly. Despite back pain late in the day, he remained composed and capitalized on loose deliveries from Joe Root to accelerate past the hundred mark.

England Strike Back, But India Hold Firm
England’s bowlers, particularly Chris Woakes, bowled well under clear skies. Woakes claimed 2 for 59 and deserved more after multiple close LBW calls went in India’s favor. Ben Stokes also chipped in with a key wicket, while Shoaib Bashir dismissed Rishabh Pant with a clever slower ball.
Late in the day, Gill and Jadeja’s unbroken stand of 99 gave India stability. The pair will resume on Day 2, aware that early wickets could shift the balance again.
